Predicting the End-Times

Predicting the End-Times
This is the end…. Again and again and again…

Did you know that self-described Christians have taught that the end-times are just around the corner since the 2nd century–even before that by New Testament authors? All through the history of the church, believers have been predicting the end-times, inferring through the events of their day that the book of Revelation was about to be fulfilled, or was already being fulfilled.

And what happened? The world trundled along, generations after their bones started turning to dust and they were forgotten forever, and their children, and their childrens’ children, and so on.  The fascination with biblical eschatology (teachings about “The End”) has long been a major preoccupation among believers, most especially within the Protestant congregations, some years after Guttenberg’s press made the scriptures attainable to the laity in the 1400’s.

All of them have been proven wrong, century after century, as governments changed hands, wars and rumors of wars were a constant, and powerful, cruel dictators ravaged a powerless citizenry. Yet it was not The End.

Famous Predictions

William Miller (Millerite church) predicted with absolute conviction that 1844 was going to see the “rapture,” and many of his followers even sold their homes, so sure were they of his prediction. We know how that turned out.

List of failed rapture / millenium prophecy dates:

500 ad, 793 ad, 1000 ad (Pope Sylvester II), 1260, 1370, 1504, 1524 (twice), 1533, 1673, 1694, 1700, 1757, 1793, 1814, 1829, 1836 (John Wesley!), 1844, 1847, 1861, 1863, 1874, 1890, 1891, 1901, 1914, 1915, 1917, 1930, {1935 – 1943 – 1972 – 1975, all by Herbert W. Armstrong}, 1982, ’88, ’94, ’99, 2000 twice, 2011 twice, 2012, 2015, and 2019 (6/9/19).

There is no profit in predicting the end-times, planning for an unbiblical pretribulation “rapture,” or preparing for some impending Armageddon. Learn to love your Maker with all your heart, and love your neighbor as yourself.  Show love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self control–the fruits of the spirit, instead of a fruitless fascination with the antichrist, the beast, armageddon, heaven, etc. Life is here, today. Don’t waste your time on such “fascination.” Be fascinated by God, his scriptures, and our Lord Yeshua. Just my two cents.
